In a landmark moment for contemporary Indian theatre, Kshitij Patwardhan’s critically acclaimed play ‘Bhumika’ has been officially inducted into the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) syllabus of the University of Mumbai. This rare academic recognition cements the play’s status as a “modern classic,” bridging the gap between commercial success and intellectual excellence.
In a chaotic contemporary environment that sharply guards diverse identities, this play, which emphatically underlines the values of humanity, reason, and integrity, possesses immense potential for enlightenment. It is for this reason that the Marathi Board of Studies has decided to include this play in the curriculum.
The play, which marks the triumphant return of versatile actor Sachin Khedekar to the stage after 21 years, has been a cultural phenomenon since its debut. Directed by the legendary Chandrakant Kulkarni, ‘Bhumika’ delves into the psychological complexities of an actor’s life, exploring the blurred lines between performance and reality.
Beyond its new academic milestone, ‘Bhumika’ was recently conferred with the prestigious Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Samman. The production has been a dominant force in the awards circuit, winning 15 prestigious awards across various categories. Its literary value was previously highlighted when the play’s book was launched by the legendary poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar.
The production has garnered immense praise from the upper echelons of India’s social and creative landscape. It has been lauded for its sophisticated writing and monumental impact by: Honourable Prakash Ambedkar, Javed Akhtar, Paresh Rawal, Vikas Divyakirit, IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma, Ashutosh Gowariker, Kumar Ketkar, Firoz Abbas Khan and several other eminent scholars and artists.
Renowned filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker termed it a “classic,” while veteran actor Paresh Rawal noted that such a powerful production is a testament to the strength of modern Marathi theatre.
‘Bhumika’ has resonated deeply with the masses, successfully completing 125 shows in just one year—a staggering feat in the world of experimental and commercial drama.
Upcoming Special Performance at NMACC To celebrate its continued success and recent honours, ‘Bhumika’ has been invited to perform at India’s premier cultural destination.
